Chairman of National ICT Authority (NICTA) and Universal Access Services (UAS) Boards, Mr Brian Riches, officially launched the NICTA Integrated Database (NIDB) and announced the release of 5G in Papua New Guinea during day one of the Digital Transformation Summit 2026.

When making this announcement , the Chairman said these important initiatives demonstrate NICTA’s commitment to advancing Papua New Guinea’s digital transformation through trusted data, modern infrastructure, and a strong regulatory environment.

The newly launched NICTA Integrated Database (NIDB) represents a major step forward in strengthening NICTA’s capability as a modern, data-driven regulator. The platform provides a secure and integrated environment for collecting, managing, and analysing ICT sector information, improving regulatory oversight, supporting evidence-based policy development, and enhancing decision-making across the sector.

The NIDB establishes a single trusted source of ICT regulatory data and lays the foundation for future innovations, including advanced analytics and data-driven regulation.

Mr Riches acknowledged the valuable support of the Economic and Social Infrastructure Program (ESIP), funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), along with ICT licensees, industry stakeholders, project teams, and NICTA staff whose contributions helped make the project a success.

The Chairman also provided an update on NICTA’s ongoing work to prepare for the future introduction of 5G services in Papua New Guinea. Following extensive technical studies, industry engagement, and public consultation, the review process is nearing completion, with the Board expected to consider the final report and recommendations in the coming months.

He said NICTA remains committed to ensuring that any future deployment of 5G is guided by transparent, evidence-based decision-making and aligns with the long-term interests of consumers, industry, and the nation.
Mr Riches emphasised that these initiatives are about more than technology.

“It is about building the foundations of a digitally connected Papua New Guinea. It is about strengthening trust through data, enabling connectivity through modern infrastructure, and creating opportunities for innovation, investment, and inclusion for all Papua New Guineans.”

The launch of the NICTA Integrated Database and the progression towards 5G readiness mark significant milestones in NICTA’s vision of building a modern, secure, and future-ready digital ecosystem for the country.
