The National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) is responsible for the regulation of telecommunications in PNG, including the licensing of operators who provide or offer telecommunications services.
NICTA is holding a public consultation to seek the views of the industry and of interested members of the public and other stakeholders on appropriate arrangements, if any, for licensing the provision of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in PNG. LEO satellite services have many advantages for particular customer segments, and NICTA seeks to realise those advantages for PNG at the earliest time, but within a suitable regulatory framework that best protects end user welfare and the continued overall development of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector in PNG. NICTA has published a Public Consultation discussion paper on its website to facilitate discussion on the issues associated with LEOs. The paper may be downloaded at www.nicta.gov.pg.
The public consultation will commence on Monday 14 August 2023 and run for four weeks. The deadline for written submissions is 4 pm on Monday 11 September 2023.
